A Google Local listing does not take effect immediately. You will have to confirm your listing by phone or mail and you still need to use standard SEO best practices--keywords (including your company name, city, etc.) in important locations--to rank. Remember that there are no silver bullets in SEO - Just hard work that will pay off.
Here's a step by step on how to get listed in Google Local.
While you wait for Google to confirm your listing, add geography-based keywords to your site. This can vary depending on the area you serve, and of course the larger the area, the more choices you have. It's generally best to focus on cities since more people search for a city name and a product or service than do a state. However, a state-based search can also bring in highly qualified long-tail leads. You can use Keyword Grader to evaluate your opportunities as described below.
- Click Settings, then click Geographic SEO.
- Use one of the following methods to obtain a list of cities:
- To obtain a list of communities near a particular city, enter the city's ZIP code, select a distance from the city in which you wish to search, and then click Get Places Nearby.
- To obtain a list of all the cities in a state or multiple states, click Search by State. Select the states you wish to search, and click Get Cities for this State.
- HubSpot displays a list of surrounding communities. Click Copy to clipboard to copy the list.
- Use the list of cities (keywords) on your website. For example, you might include a section titled "Areas we serve", or create custom pages for particular geographic areas. Check them on Keyword Grader first. Are people searching for “dry cleaning boston” or “dry cleaners in boston”? This will help you optimize accurately.
