SEO advice: url canonicalization

Before I start collecting feedback on the Bigdaddy data center, I want to talk a little bit about canonicalization, www vs. non-www, redirects, duplicate urls, 302 “hijacking,” etc. so that we’re all on the same page.

Q: What is a canonical url? Do you have to use such a weird word, anyway?
A: Sorry that it’s a strange word; that’s what we call it around Google. Canonicalization is the process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages. For example, most people would consider these the same urls:

www.example.com
example.com/
www.example.com/index.html
example.com/home.asp

But technically all of these urls are different. A web server could return completely different content for all the urls above. When Google “canonicalizes” a url, we try to pick the url that seems like the best representative from that set.

Q: So how do I make sure that Google picks the url that I want?
A: One thing that helps is to pick the url that you want and use that url consistently across your entire site. For example, don’t make half of your links go to http://example.com/ and the other half go to http://www.example.com/ . Instead, pick the url you prefer and always use that format for your internal links.

Q: Is there anything else I can do?
A: Yes. Suppose you want your default url to be http://www.example.com/ . You can make your webserver so that if someone requests http://example.com/, it does a 301 (permanent) redirect to http://www.example.com/ . That helps Google know which url you prefer to be canonical. Adding a 301 redirect can be an especially good idea if your site changes often (e.g. dynamic content, a blog, etc.).

Q: If I want to get rid of domain.com but keep www.domain.com, should I use the url removal tool to remove domain.com?
A: No, definitely don’t do this. If you remove one of the www vs. non-www hostnames, it can end up removing your whole domain for six months. Definitely don’t do this. If you did use the url removal tool to remove your entire domain when you actually only wanted to remove the www or non-www version of your domain, do a reinclusion request and mention that you removed your entire domain by accident using the url removal tool and that you’d like it reincluded.

Q: I noticed that you don’t do a 301 redirect on your site from the non-www to the www version, Matt. Why not? Are you stupid in the head?
A: Actually, it’s on purpose. I noticed that several months ago but decided not to change it on my end or ask anyone at Google to fix it. I may add a 301 eventually, but for now it’s a helpful test case.

Q: So when you say www vs. non-www, you’re talking about a type of canonicalization. Are there other ways that urls get canonicalized?
A: Yes, there can be a lot, but most people never notice (or need to notice) them. Search engines can do things like keeping or removing trailing slashes, trying to convert urls with upper case to lower case, or removing session IDs from bulletin board or other software (many bulletin board software packages will work fine if you omit the session ID).

Q: Let’s talk about the inurl: operator. Why does everyone think that if inurl:mydomain.com shows results that aren’t from mydomain.com, it must be hijacked?
A: Many months ago, if you saw someresult.com/search2.php?url=mydomain.com, that would sometimes have content from mydomain. That could happen when the someresult.com url was a 302 redirect to mydomain.com and we decided to show a result from someresult.com. Since then, we’ve changed our heuristics to make showing the source url for 302 redirects much more rare. We are moving to a framework for handling redirects in which we will almost always show the destination url. Yahoo handles 302 redirects by usually showing the destination url, and we are in the middle of transitioning to a similar set of heuristics. Note that Yahoo reserves the right to have exceptions on redirect handling, and Google does too. Based on our analysis, we will show the source url for a 302 redirect less than half a percent of the time (basically, when we have strong reason to think the source url is correct).

Q: Okay, how about supplemental results. Do supplemental results cause a penalty in Google?
A: Nope.

Q: I have some pages in the supplemental results that are old now. What should I do?
A: I wouldn’t spend much effort on them. If the pages have moved, I would make sure that there’s a 301 redirect to the new location of pages. If the pages are truly gone, I’d make sure that you serve a 404 on those pages. After that, I wouldn’t put any more effort in. When Google eventually recrawls those pages, it will pick up the changes, but because it can take longer for us to crawl supplemental results, you might not see that update for a while.

That’s about all I can think of for now. I’ll try to talk about some examples of 302′s and inurl: soon, to help make some of this more concrete.

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

The .htaccess file needs to be placed in the root directory of your old website (i.e the same directory where your index file is placed)

In addition to the redirect I would suggest that you contact every backlinking site to modify their backlink to point to your new website.

The Google Place page is a free service where a business is able to post a description of their business, the hours they are open, their business address, email address, and phone number, as well as the URL for their website. It’s a breeze for your customer to do so and it helps you immensely in your search engine rankings. One word of caution – do not offer your customers a prize or a reward for doing so. Google shuns such action and it could get you removed from Google Places.

7. Try to space the reviews out so there is a steady stream of them rather than a large grouping and then nothing. This could be picked up by the search engines as spam or as fraudulent reviews, which could cause Google to place you lower on the Google Places page.

8. Take the time to get your business listed in as many relevant business directories as possible. This helps to build your ranking and placement on Google and on Google Places since it legitimizes your business.

9. You are allowed to add up to 10 photos and 5 videos to your Google places page. Take advantage of this as it will help to boost your page ranking in Google Places. Potential customers are also drawn to this type of promotion.

10. Finally, take the time to monitor your Google Places analytics. You can find out what the top searchers are that potential customers are querying. You can learn how many clicks are happening, and you can find a host of information that is relevant to your business and how you market your business.

Ten SEO Tips for Optimizing Google Places with Organic Listings

n October 2010 Google started blending the organic website listings and the Google Places listing. Google called this “Place Search” and the results began appearing automatically when Google predicts a searcher is looking for local information.

Place Search is a major change to local search. Local oriented businesses owners must now focus attention on both quality organic placement while simultaneously increasing local Place Search ranking in order to achieve a high blended listing.

Luckily, the traditional organic search engine optimization (SEO) tactic’s we’ve used for websites also influences the ranking of Google Place Search listings. However, there are new SEO tactics we use specifically targeted to obtaining high blended listings in Place Search.

Below are ten Google Place Search SEO tips and tactics for improving blended rankings.

1. Owner-verify Your Place Page

This is step one. You (or your trusted SEO) must first claim your Google Places listing before you can optimize the Place Page content. You claim your Places listing by proving to Google you are the owner of the business. If you need to claim your Place Page you can find out everything you need to know at the Google Places Help page athttp://www.google.com/support/places/ .

2. Physical Address Consistency

Google Place Search gives weight to the consistency of your local business name, address and phone (NAP), so you must make sure the same NAP is used on your Place Page, website and local directories. Be sure to emphasize a local phone number with area code, never list only a toll free 800 number.

Warning: Google is always on the lookout for bogus listings and errors, and any inconsistencies about your NAP could hurt your rankings.

3. Choosing the Best Categories

Your business Place Page allows you to select up to five categories for your business. I have found that the keywords used in the category are the most important factor in getting your business to appear for search categories. Google will suggest categories as you type in the category fields. Use the suggested terms if they are appropriate for you business. You can create your own unique categories just by typing in the keywords. Use keywords your customers would use to find you. Don’t include the city in the category because your Place Page is by default associated with your NAP info.

4. Associate Your Website and Place Page

Google will consider your business website the most authoritative reference about your business, so you want Google Places to easily find your website so Google can use your website data to validate the accuracy of your Place Page profile. Your Place Page has a field for your website address, make sure this is complete and accurate. To help Google make the association, I include a link from the business website to the business Place Page. I include location and category/service keywords in the text of the link.

You can also include the same meta title and header keywords and even multi-media files on both your website and Place Page to further validate the association.

The important thing to know is that if Google can't associate your Place Page with your website, you probably won't get a blended listing. If you’re in a competitive market, you have an advantage if you have a good blended listing because searchers will see more info about your business on the limited search results pages.

5. Citations and Reviews

Many in the SEO industry believe that website citations and reviews are one of the most important factors for improving the actual ranking of your Place Search listing (as of 2011). A citation is SEO-speak for a link to your website from a reputable and usually well known web directory. Here is a list of important citation sources:

Yelp
Superpages
Citysearch
Yellowpages
Infogroup
Yahoo Local
Localeze
InsiderPages
Niche Industry Sites (i.e. TripAdvisor, DealerRater)

Reminder: The consistency of your business name, address, phone (NAP) is very important with citations. Brand can also be important in citations if appropriate.

Many of the above citations sources will find your site on their own and you don’t have to do anything to get the citation. You should double check citations for accuracy in the NAP as mentioned above. There are automated services that do a good job of getting you into the important citation sources. I recommend Universal Business Listing at https://www.ubl.org.

6. More Reviews + Good Ratings = More Clicks

Google engineers publicly state that volume of reviews and rating values are not affecting rankings. However, many SEOs like myself believe that a higher quantity of reviews relative to your competitors may indicate your site is more popular, and possibly improve your ranking. Therefore, I recommend taking action to continually obtain more reviews in Google Places and other local review oriented sites like Yelp, Trip Advisor, etc.

Warning: Obtaining lots of reviews may help your ranking, but don’t take unnatural steps to get reviews or Google might label your links untrustworthy. Steady growth is best.

You don’t need only positive reviews, this can look unnaturally “stuffed.” Amazon has trained the surfing public to expect both positive and negative reviews. You can respond publicly as the owner to a bad review which is a very good thing to do.

Make it easy for your customers to give you a review. Put a link on your website directly to your Place Page. Brainstorm ways to obtain new customer reviews for your industry.

To look more natural, I recommend trying to obtain reviews from diverse sources. Focusing on Google or Yelp is good, but trying to find other review sources for your industry or location would look more natural and therefore help rankings.

7. Place Page Content

Make your business Place Page content shine with great copy and images. Write the content for your page with you customers in mind. What do you customer typically search for when using your product/service? What criteria do they use to select a business? Essentially use the Place Page to accentuate the features and benefits of your business to your customers. Google makes it easy to include photos, videos and links in your profile, so SEO logic says Google will favor businesses that use the tools they provide. So brainstorm ways to add great content to your Place Page and keep it fresh.

8. Social Media Links

Social media participation can create quality links, mentions and citations to your business which can improve your blended Place Search and organic rankings. I recommend you post regular updates to Facebook and Twitter that are related to your products, services or local area. Social media can be time consuming and not all businesses are interested in it, so at a minimum I recommend regular website blog updates with announcement of the update in Facebook and Twitter.

9. Physical Proximity to Location

Many SEOs claim your physical location must be within the city to get high rankings for your city. I have seen exceptions to this, and I believe the key is to have a strong organic SEO website. Aggressive organic SEO and following the Place Page SEO tactics described here can help your Place Page listing displace your competitors listings within the city borders.

10. Check Your Competitors Place Search and Place Page

Review your competitions Place Page profiles. If they rank higher than you, see if the competitor has citations that you can also obtain. Add photos and videos to make your page standout among your competitors.

What is Google’s Sandbox?

The Google Sandbox Effect is a theory used to explain why newly-registered domains or domains with frequent ownership changes rank poorly in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). In other words new websites are put into a “sandbox” or a holding area and have their search ratings on hold until they can prove worthy of ranking.

Once Google deems a website to be of quality and importance the website will be removed from the Sandbox and can potentially show up high in Google Search Engine Results Pages. Webmasters can do numerous things to improve their website with Google, but time really is the key in getting out of the Sandbox. Sandbox believers say it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year and sometimes longer before Google will promote a website out of the Sandbox.

Because Google does not acknowledge the Sandbox and it has not been clearly proven the Sandbox Effect is just a theory. Even though it is just a theory, the Sandbox is believed by the majority of webmasters. The Sandbox is believed to have come about in 2004 when changes to Google’s Algorithm made it so new websites were banned from the top of Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS).

It may seem that the Sandbox is unfair to newly launched websites, but Google created the Sandbox with good reasons. Google was trying to discourage spam sites from quickly reaching the top of Search Results, getting dropped off Google, creating a new site and repeatedly showing up high in Search Results. In the past, companies would put up a promotional website for a short period of time and once the promotion was over the website was gone. These promotional websites would still show up high inGoogle Search Engine Results even after they were removed, causing many broken links and unhappy Google searchers.

Even with the Sandbox Effect it is still possible for newly launched websites to make it to the top of Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). If Google deems a new website of being worthy it can be seen in Search Engine Results immediately, but it can still take up to 6 months for the website to rank to its fullest potential. There are many ways in which web designers use to avoid the Sandbox, some of which are discussed below. But because of its uncertainty, even if all algorithm variables are followed there is still no way to guarantee new websites from being put in the Sandbox.

How can you tell if you are in Google’s Sandbox?

Now that you know what the Sandbox is it is important to learn how to tell if a site is in the Sandbox. Before determining if a website has been put in the Sandbox you need to find out if the entire site was dropped from Google or if it has just been ranked down for certain keyword phrases.

Start by doing a search in Google for your site. To do this type: “ site:www.yourdomain.com ” in the Google Search bar (replace “yourdomain.com” with your site URL). If Google does not return any results than most likely your entire website has been dropped by Google. If Google shows your website in the results and your website recently dropped down in keyword rankings, than you are still indexed by Google and it is likely that you were placed in the Sandbox.

New websites start out on the bottom with a zero page rank but with time the site can start ranking up. Does your website have a pagerank but it is still not showing up in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS)? If that is the case, your website is more than likely in the Sandbox. Often times a new website can have a pagerank after a short period of time, rank high in Google Search Results and then all of a sudden disappear from Google Search Results. When this happens it is likely that the site was put intoGoogle’s Sandbox. Many people are left asking themselves why? There is no one answer as to why websites get put into the Sandbox, but below is a list of things thought to affect website’s placement with Google.

Factors affecting a website's Google placement

Google’s Sandbox is not an exact science, so the exact factors which affect a website’s placement in Google are not known. However, there are many proven tactics which can affect the placement of a website which are listed below.

It is possible that someone else spammed people under your domain. This can occur when a domain expires for a short period of time and during that time another person takes over that domain and puts up a spam site.
Has someone stolen the content from your website? If they have than it is likely it has been published on numerous other websites. And as many people know duplicate content and copyright infringement is not good for websites.
Has your server been down or been having problems? Google might have come to index your website when your site was down causing their spiders to not find any content. This means that the most recent index of your site will not show anything.
Do you keep up with Google’s algorithm? If not, it is possible that Google has changed its algorithm factors and your website no longer meets Google’s placement factors.
Do you have any bad links on your website? Having broken links on your site could greatly affect your Google ranking. If you linked to a website a long time ago it is good practice to check back and make sure the site is still legit (and not a spam site) because linking to a bad site can also affect your Google ranking.
Is your domain brand new? It is best to buy an old or expired domain, but if that is not possible it is good to make a domain active for some time before you intend to build your new website.
It is thought that sites which go after the more competitive and popular keywords are more likely to get placed in the Sandbox. To avoid this, start a new website by going after less competitive keywords and work your way up with time.

In conclusion, the majority of new websites get put into Google’s Sandbox. If a website gets put into the Sandbox, it typically takes six months to one year to get out and be placed in Google’s Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). But if planned and built properly it is possible for new websites to avoid Google’s Sandbox.

Various techniques are used for search engine optimization, or SEO. One way to group these techniques is with hatterminology: white hat SEO, black hat SEO, and gray hat SEO. White hat SEO is considered ethical SEO, while black hat SEO is considered unethical SEO. Gray hat SEO walks the line between the white and black hats of search engine optimization.

White hat SEO is ethical SEO. It's SEO techniques that search engines accept. White hat SEO techniques are beneficial for site visitors as well as for search engines. The goal of white hat SEO is to improve search engine result positions via methods that won't cause search engines to penalize the site.White hat SEO

Successful white hat SEO is slower than black hat SEO and is an ongoing process.

Content

Researching relevant keywords, both short ail and long tail keywords
Including keywords naturally in page titles, headings, link anchor text, other page content, and alt tags
Studying analytics reports and fine-tuning the content to further optimize it for targeted keywords and to help direct traffic to relevant pages
Adding fresh content regularly

Coding

Using correct HTML markup (for example, heading tags) so that search engines can identify headings and other types of content correctly
Making sure that all the code is valid (or at least won't stop search engine bots)
Creating site maps so that every page is linked to and search engine bots can crawl every page
Using CSS to separate content from markup and thus increase keyword density by having less markup to crawl

Linking

Creating quality content that other people will want to link to
Asking to have directories and other relevant websites link to the site
Optimizing pages for social media in the hopes of attracting social media links
Arranging for link exchanges with relevant sites (considered by some to be gray hat SEO)

Black hat SEO

Black hat SEO is the use of techniques that are unacceptable to search engines to boost a page's position in search results. These techniques are intended to trick search engines into giving pages higher positions in search results, and they have no benefit to site visitors. The goal is to improve search engine result positions no matter what it takes to do it.

Black hat SEO techniques are used for two reasons:

They work — until search engines find out about them and they don't work.
Some people don't understand that black hat SEO techniques can get their sites penalized by or banned from search engines.

Even if search engines can't detect the black hat SEO techniques, competitors of sites that employ black hat SEO techniques can spot them and do report them to search engines.

Examples of black hat SEO techniques

Content

Keyword stuffing
- Overusing keywords in comment tags, alt tags, and meta tags
- Placing keywords in hidden text (hidden from people, that is) by making their font color the same color as the page background
- Overusing keywords in visible text, to the point where their repetition is apparent to readers

Deceptive content

Doorway or gateway pages: pages that are stuffed with keywords but that only search engines see because people are redirected to the page with the real content
Cloaking: displaying different content to search engines than to people by identifying visitors via IP or via other methods

Linking

Link farms: pages with unrelated links solely for the purpose of creating more links to target pages
Spamming forums, blogs, and other social media sites with links (search engines might not penalize sites for this, but it's considered unethical)

Gray hat SEO

Site map. A big site needs a site map, which should be linked to from every page on the site. This will help the search engine robots find every page with just two clicks. A small site needs a site map, too. It’s called the navigation bar.

Not anchor text. Don’t overdo the anchor text. You don’t want all your inbound links looking the same, because that looks like automation - something Google frowns upon. Use your URL sometimes, your company name other times, “Gumbo Pudding Pop” occasionally, “Get gumbo pudding pops” as well, “Gumbo-flavored pudding pops” some other times, etc.

Deep linking. Make sure you have links coming in to as many pages as possible. What does it tell a search engine when other web sites are linking to different pages on your site? That you obviously have lots of worthwhile content. What does it tell a search engine that all your links are coming in to the home page? That you have a shallow site of little value, or that your links were generated by automation rather than by the value of your site.

Become a foreigner. Canada and the UK have many directories for websites of companies based in those countries. Can you get a business address in one of those countries?

Newsletters. Offer articles to ezine publishers that archive their ezines. The links stay live often for many years in their archives.

Multiple domains. If you have several topics that could each support their own website, it might be worth having multiple domains. Why? मधुबनी, निसं : नवविवाहिताओ का प्रसिद्ध पर्व मधुश्रावणी मंगलवार को महिलाओं के मधुर कंठ से गाए जा रहे भगवती व अन्य देव परक गीतों के बीच वर द्वारा किए गए सिंदूरदान व विधकरी के द्वारा टेमी दागने के बाद संपन्न हो गया।

मधुश्रावनी को लेकर आज नवविवाहिताओं के घर चहल-पहल रही। गीतों से वातावरण गुलजार हो रहा था। व्रती नव विवाहिताएं ससुराल से आये वस्त्र धारण कर पूजा के लिए कोहबर घर में बैठीं। पूजा के लिए उन्होंने सोमवार की शाम ही फूलों के साथ विभिन्न पेड़-पौधों की पत्तियां जमा कर ली थीं। इनसे गौरी, चनाइ, बैरसी, विषहारा आदि की पूजा हुई। आज बांस से बनी डालियां व मौनी में लहठी, सिंदूर, आईना, कंघी आदि भी रखे अंतिम दिन श्रीकर राजा व भगवान गणेश द्वारा सुहाग मंथन की कथा हुई। मधुश्रावणी पर पति भी पूजा के दौरान संग बैठे। उन्होंने तीसरी बार पत्‍‌नी को सिंदूरदान किया। वहीं जब पति ने 'करतल धय पान जुगुतिसँ मूनब सीता दाइ केर नयना श्रीराम हे' गीत के बीच पान के पत्तों से उनकी आंखें मूंदीं तो रोमांचित हो उठीं। टेमी दागने की प्रथा जो होनी थी। विधकरी ने महीन छिद्र किए पान के पत्तों को घुटने व हाथ पर रखे तथा जलती बाती से टेमी दागने की प्रथा पूरी की। उधर, एक सुहागिन तांबे के बर्तन में धनियां, धान व पानी डाल उसे लकड़ियों से मिलाते सुहाग मंथन की विधि पूरी करती रहीं। पूजा के बाद व्रती नव ब्याहताओं ने उसे सुहागिनों के बीच बांटा। मधुश्रावणी की रस्म महिला पुरोहित के द्वारा संपन्न की गयी। वहीं ससुराल से आए विभिन्न प्रकार के फल, मिठाई व अन्य सामग्रियों का वितरण भी किया गया।

दरभंगा, निज संवाददाता : मिथिला की नव विवाहिताओं ने महापर्व मधुश्रावणी को लेकर बुधवार से पूजा-अर्चना शुरू कर दी है। वहीं फिजां में गीतों की स्वर लहरियां तैरने लगी हैं। उन व्रती नव विवाहिताओं के घर-आंगन में आज आसपड़ोस की महिलाओं का जमघट लगा रहा जो पहली बार यह महापर्व मना रही हैं। पहले दिन नव विवाहिताओं ने बासी फूल और पेड़-पौधों के पत्तों से पूजा करते हुए कोहबर घर में मिट्टी की बनी विषहारा पांचों बहनों को दूध-लाव चढ़ाया। पिसी हल्दी व दूब से निर्मित गौरी के साथ चनाइ को पूजा और महिला पंडित से पहले दिन 'मौना पंचमी' की कथा सुनी। इसके बाद जाही-जूही फूल विषहरा पर छींटे और माहौल गीतों में डूब गया- 'फूल छीटऽमे लागय सोहान विषहरि मंदिरमे.।' व्रती नव विवाहिताओं ने आज से एक ही शाम बिना नमक का अरबा भोजन आरंभ कर दिया है। पूजन-सामग्री के साथ ही भोजन के लिए अन्न आदि भी ससुराल से आए हैं। श्रावण कृष्ण पक्ष की पंचमी पर आज से आरंभ पूजा का यह क्रम आगामी 2 अगस्त को श्रावण शुक्ल पक्ष तृतीया पर संपन्न होगा। अंतिम दिन मधुश्रावणी पर पति द्वारा एक बार फिर सिंदुरदान किया जाएगा तो 'टेमी दागने' की प्रतीक परंपरा भी होगी। इधर, शाम में नव विवाहिताओं की टोलियां बागीचों से फूल व विभिन्न पेड़-पौधों की वनस्पतियां चुनने में जुटी रहीं। इन्हीं फूलों से गुरुवार को पूजा होगी। व्रती दूसरे दिन 'पृथ्वी के जन्म' की कथा सुनेंगी। उल्लेखनीय है कि इस पर्व में प्रयुक्त होने वाली सामग्री प्रकृति से ली गई तो होती ही हैं। बरसात के समय में सर्प का प्रकोप बढ़ने को लेकर उनकी पूजा का विधान कर यह ध्यान दिलाने का प्रयास भी होता है कि उन्हें अकारण नहीं मारा जाए, क्योंकि वह भी प्रकृति का ही अंग है।

Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision, if you will. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high schools, it is most popular online.

This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other people, to gather and share first-hand information and experiences about cooking, golfing, gardening, developing friendships or professional alliances, finding employment, business-to-business marketing and even groups sharing information about the end of the Mayan calendar and the Great Shift to arrive December 21, 2012. The topics and interests are as varied and rich as the story of our universe.

When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.

The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking online. Another one of those benefits includes diversity because the internet gives individuals from all around the world access to social networking sites. This means that although you are in the United States, you could develop an online friendship with someone in Denmark or India. As I'm sure you're aware, there are dangers associated with social networking including data theft and viruses, which are on the rise. The most prevalent danger though often involves online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists in the real world, too. Just like you're advised when meeting strangers at clubs and bars, school, or work -- you are also advised to proceed with caution online.

By being aware of your cyber-surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online. It will take many phone conversations to get to know someone, but you really won't be able to make a clear judgment until you can meet each other in person. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn't feel right about the online conversations taking place.

Once you are well informed and comfortable with your findings, you can begin your search from hundreds of networking communities to join. This can easily be done by performing a standard internet search. Your search will likely return a number of results, including MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut, and Classmates.

What's In Your SEO Toolbox?

The SEO tool space is a pretty crowded one (and growing one!). Tools are helpful, there is no doubt about that. However, tools are generally only as good as the person using them. We'd love to know what tools you use and why, so please let us know in the comments after the post :)
I am not "house" handy by any means, I can barely hang a picture frame straight. So if you gave me the best construction tools in the world I'd still make extra holes and screw something up.
Even if I managed to get the picture hung correctly, it certainly would not look professional.
You can buy as many guides, tools, and accessories as you like but in the end it is your skill that determines the success or failure of a project (building a deck or building a website). Skills can be harnessed, but tools do not overcome a lack of skill.

SEO Tool Fatigue

SEO tool fatigue is a real issue for some folks. Some people spend a good chunk of their productivity on testing or trying out new tools, or even using so many tools that their implementation and interpretation of data suffers a great deal. One tool says this, another says that, and yet another says 1 or the other or both or neither :) .
The first thing to realize is that most of the data from tools (excluding analytics and such) are basically estimates of estimated data, or are directly from Google's various estimation-type tools (Keyword Tool, Trends, Insights, and so on), or driven off what the tool builder thinks are important or reliable metrics to build your research off of (there tends to be some swings and misses with that type of approach).
You are not going to fail miserably if you decide not to do days and days and days of keyword research with multiple tools and then spending more days comparing different datasets. Research is important, but there is a limit.

Picking a Core Set of Tools

From a cost and time standpoint I've found it really helpful to pick a core set of tools and stick with them rather than bouncing around to get an extra feature or two.
It's good to peek around from time to time but using mostly similar tools can lead to a "needle in the haystack" approach; where you spend most of your time digging a time-suck hole rather than building websites and adjusting strategies based on analytics and/or AdWords data.
Again, research is important but there is a sweet spot and it's a good idea to get some kind of system down so you can focus on doing "enough" research without doing harm to the time it takes you to get sites up and running.

Evaluating Tools

I'm going to highlight some of the tools I've used below, most of which are considered to be market leaders. I'll point out why I use certain tools, why I don't use others (yet) and I encourage anyone who's dealing with tool overload to do the same for the tools you use.
The areas I'll be focusing on are:

On Page Criteria
Rank Checkers
Competitive Link Research Tools
Link Monitoring

Keyword Research

There are many keyword research tools that pull data from the sources listed below (like our free keyword research tool, which pulls from Wordtracker).

These tools use their own databases (although in Wordtracker you can ping Google's tool as well).
I use all the Google tools as well as Ad Intelligence and Wordtracker as well as the SeoBook Keyword Tool. Sometimes I use Wordtracker just via our keyword research tool and sometimes I use Wordtracker's web interface (I like being able to store stuff in there).
Our keyword tool also links in to most of the sources listed above. A big reason why I like our keyword research tool is that it's super easy to hit the major data points I want to hit on a particular keyword from one location.
Ad Intelligence is solid as (Microsoft claims) they incorporate actual search data into their results, rather than estimating like Google does.
I should also note that I mainly use Trends and Insights for comparing similar keywords and looking at locality (in addition to the history of keywords). Sometimes you run across really similar keywords (car, auto) and it can help to know which one is most relevant to your campaign.

On-Page Optimization

For the on page stuff I'm mainly concerned with large scale, high level overviews.
I use our toolbar for specific on-page stuff but when I'm looking to diagnose internal linking problems (not maximizing internal link flow, broken links, http status codes, and so on) or issues with title tags and meta descriptions either missing, being too short, or too long, or duplication then I use a couple different tools.

Since I'm on a Mac and I don't care to run Windows for anything other than testing, I use the three listed which work on Mac (though I don't use them in every situation).
I use Screaming Frog's SEO Spider pretty frequently as well as Peacock's Integrity. Integrity is a broken link checker while SEO Spider incorporates other SEO related features (title tags, H1/H2's, anchor text, and a ton of other important elements).
WebSite Auditor offers most, if not all, of what SEO Spider does but also incorporates white-label reporting, Google Page Rank, Yahoo! & Google Link popularity, cache dates, and so on.
For some of those features in Website Auditor you might want to either outsource the Captcha inputting or use their Anti-Captcha service so you don't have to sit there for hours entering in captcha's.
In my regular workflow, SEO Spider and Integrity get used a lot and Website Auditor comes in to play for some of those other metrics and for white label reporting.

Rank Checking

Here's a crowded space! So I think the right choice here really depends on your needs. Are you a solo SEO who runs multiple sites, or maybe you run your own sites and client sites, or maybe you are a client-only shop.
Here are some of the main players in this space:

Even if you have reporting needs, you can still do a lot for free with our free rank checking tool (scheduled reports, stored reports, multiple search engines, and so on) and Excel or another spreadsheet program like OpenOffice.Org or Google Docs. Some good tips on creating ranking charts with Excel can be found here.
There are a couple differences with the software players, Advanced Web Ranking and Link Assistant's Rank Tracker (both have multiple levels so it's wise to check the features of both to see if you need the higher end version or if the lower priced versions will work for you). Some of the key differences are:

Rank Tracker integrates with Google Analytics
Advanced Web Ranking has a variety of ways to track local rankings, including maps and a local preview engine
Advanced Web Ranking has more, easier to customize reporting options
I find that the interface with Rank Tracker is much easier to work with
If all you are looking for is rank checking, then Link Assistant is a bit cheaper overall (comparing enterprise versions of both). While noting, AWR has more local options at their higher price point. You can see AWR's pricing here and Link Assistant's here. Note, it's worthwhile to check out maintenance pricing as well (Link Assistant and AWR)
AWR let's you assign a proxy per project, which can be really helpful if you have clients all over the map.
AWR automatically pulls in the top ten sites for a keyword, and their last position compared to current, and let's you add that site to your tracking (at any point) with all the historical data saved and updated within your account.

One tip with software tools is to run them on a different machine, perhaps even behind an IP off of a private VPN service like WiTopia, and think about utilizing multiple proxies from a service like Trusted Proxies and/or using an anti-captcha service with Link Assistant's tools.
The idea is to not get your IP banned and to let you continue to work as normal on your main machine while another machine is handling the automated queries. If you don't want to fuss with that, you might want to try a cloud app.

The Cloud and Scalability

The 3 main services, that I've used anyway, come from Raven, SeoMoz, and Authority Labs. Authority Labs now powers Raven's SERP tracker too. My biggest concern with cloud-based rank checkers is that the keyword volume can be (understandably) limited. Now, Authority Labs has unlimited checking at 450/month but the other two have limits.
Let's just look at the highest plans for a second, Moz allows 30 campaigns and a total of 3,500 keywords. Raven's highest plan allows for unlimited domains and 2,500 keywords total (and 200 competitors).
If scalability is a concern for you then you might be better off with software solutions. Once you start running multiple sites or are responsible for reporting on multiple sites (and you are working the long tail and your analytics) then you can see how restrictive this could become.
Of course, comparing just the rank checking options of a tool set like Raven and Moz (which both have other useful tools, Raven more so for full on campaign management) doesn't do the pricing justice. So what you could do is still use the many other tools available from each company and use a software solution once your rank checking scales beyond what they offer.
Both Moz and Raven integrate with Google Analytics, and Raven's campaign integration with GA is quite nice too (beyond just rankings).

Link Research

Free tools like Yahoo!'s Site Explorer, search query tools like Solo SEO's link search tool and Blekko's link data are nice but at some point in your SEO career you'll might have to get on board with a more advanced link research tool or tools to get the data you need to compete in competitive SERPS.
A good chunk of software-based solutions pull link data from search engines but if you want a more, way more, comprehensive view of a competing site's link profile (and link history) you do have a few options.

Majestic was originally known for having a much deeper database, with the caveat that they keep a lot of decayed links, and their UI wasn't overly impressive. Well, as noted in a recent blog post (which includes 20% off coupons) on Majestic's new tools, most of that isn't the case anymore. Though, I still feel Open Site Explorer has a better and smoother UI.
Advanced Link Manager's strength lies in their ongoing link management and reporting but they also have some decent link research tools built in and they can connect to SeoMoz's API to gather link data, so that kind of sets them apart from those other software-based solutions.
Again, Moz offers other tools as well so it's hard to really compare price points. What I like about OSE is that you can get a really solid, quick overview of the anchor text profile of a competing site. Also, you get unlimited look ups and up to 10k links per query on their pro plan (in addition to other Moz tools). You can get a 30 day free trial of all the Moz tools as of this writing.

Majestic's New Tools

Majestic, now with their new site explorer and fresh index, rival OSE's UI and freshness a bit but there still are limits on usage. You can check out Majestic's pricing here and don't forget about the 20% off coupon mentioned here.
Typically I like to use both Majestic and OSE. I like the new tools Majestic has come out with and their historical data is solid. OSE, for me, is great for getting some of a site's top metrics quickly (anchor text, top pages, etc).
If I had to pick one, I'd go with Majestic mostly because Moz gives a decent amount of data away for free (being a registered user) and because Majestic has really good historical + deeper data.

Link Management

Building links, especially if you have a team, can be a cumbersome process unless you have collaborative tools to work with. Even if you operate mostly on your own, you might want to track links you've earned or built directly.
Every once and awhile i like to download a report from Majestic SEO and add any links that are not yet in my tracking program into the program. Some people like to just track paid or exchanged links and let the natural ones sort of come and go naturally.
There are a couple of tools out there that I've used, and one I haven't but I've heard good things about it from reputable sources so I'll include it here.

Raven's Link Manager
Buzzstream
Advanced Link Manager

Raven's Link Manager is probably their flagship tool. It has received really high praise from experienced SEO's and is easy to use. You can easily add links, assign them to employees, and let Raven worry about the automatic checking and reporting in case something changes with a link.
Advanced Link Manager has many features built in but you can use it just for tracking links you want to track by uploading the links into the program. It's software based and you can set it to run whenever you'd like, automatically.
I personally haven't used Buzzstream, but reputable people have told me it is a solid program, and they have a free 14 day trial here. It's a dedicated link building and management tool (and also has a PR and social media tool) so chances are if you are looking for a specific tool to fill that need, this one might be worth a shot.
If you don't have a ton of links to manage or a team to manage, you might be just fine with an Excel spreadsheet or a Google Doc. To me, it's just one more thing to think about and Raven and Buzzstream have low priced plans if you don't need enterprise-level storage.
